Joseph Hubanks - Columbus Cottage #3

Joseph Hubanks, SSG (R), was born in Gary, Indiana and joined the Army after graduating from high school. He retired in 1973 after twenty-two and a half years and settled here near his last post. A Veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam, after retirement he worked as a mechanic at Dew's Service Station in Columbus, Georgia.
For 30 years, Joseph has called Rochester Avenue home. Several years ago he became quite ill and was not expected to live. During his illness the house became too much for him to maintain. His roof started leaking and the attic caved in. This eventually lead to total corrosion of the main beams and caused sinking floors. This has made the house impossible to live in. Yet, Mr. Hubanks continues to live there. Mr. Hubanks still has a positive attitude and the love of his two dogs; Pepper and Vick help him through the day-to-day struggles. He grills out in his backyard-often with neighbors, as he doesn't have a kitchen or any refrigeration and there is no running water.
Joseph still maintains his yard and cuts the grass himself. To drive by and see the outside of the house-you would never know the poor conditions that one of our fellow American Veterans is living. He is a very dignified, proud Veteran who served his country and is humbled by the announcement that he will soon be the proud owner of a brand new Cottage in the neighborhood he has lived in for thirty years!
